What’s the difference between foam flowers and silk flowers?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

It’s not going in an envelope, I’m talking full size artificial flowers. I’m doing some floristry for a wedding and haven’t done an awful lot of artificial flowers before, so I’m just wondering whether silk flowers and foam flowers are actually the same, given that they look very similar in the pictures.

Foam flower petals are thicker than silk flower petals. They don’t have that flower petal feel that silk can reproduce; rather they will feel like foam sheeting. Up close they do not look nearly as real as silk, and are more for outdoor events, or places where the flowers will need to stand up to harsher treatment.

Since people tend to get rather close to look and poke at flower arrangements at weddings, I think you should use the silk since they will look and feel more realistic up close.

how long does it take for flower to change colors in colored water?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

I’ve tried to do this science project, and according to one paper it should start changing within hours. It has been 2 days and the flowers only have a few dots of color to them. How long should it take? I’ve used mums and carnations. Is there another type of flower that works better?

I don’t really know how long but I don’t think it should take 2 days. Carnations normally work pretty well. I bought some daisy’s the other day that were dyed so you could try that. One thing to keep in mind is you want to cut the stem right before you start – it simulates the "veins" of the flower and draws the color in better.

Aspirin for fresh cut flowers?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

I was told that if I put an aspirin in a vase of fresh cut flowers, it will preserve them longer. Is this true and if so, what does the aspirin do to the flowers? How often should I change the water in the vase because I do not know how to preserve roses but I want to save these!! If anyone knows what I’m talking about, please let me know!

drop one or two non-coated aspirin in the water first. Cut the stems at a slant, and then place the flowers in the water. Don’t know how it works, but it will sometimes keep them fresh looking for up to 2 weeks. If the water starts turning a green color, empty and start over.

How to send flowers from the philippines to north dakota?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

I’m sending flowers to my girlfriend who’s in North Dakota, so which is cheaper, buying one locally and sending it to her? or buying one from those flower delivery services in the US?

If you buy flowers online from US based floral wire service, you would be guaranteed that the goods will be delivered fresh. You won’t have to worry too of looking for the right packaging for the flowers. Also, I believe, FedEx and UPS do not accept shipments of cut flowers, live plants, and even dried plants. Well even if your shipment gets through, for example, FedEx, you’d pay roughly $150 for International Priority Mail. Compare that to paying FTD as low as $74 for a bouquet of roses shipped next day.

Who has flowers delivered to funeral home when there is a death in family.?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

My grandpap just passed away yesterday, and his funeral will be held this Saturday. I automatically wanted to have flowers delivered to the funeral home. Is this appropriate? Am I suppose to have flowers delivered, or is this something just friends of the family members do?

You can indeed send flowers to the funeral home for your grandfather. It shows you loved him and want to honor him. Usually a family is in too much grief to even think about it, but I personally think there is nothing wrong with it. When my grandparents died, I even asked the funeral home and/or the minister if I could put my picture in their caskets before they were closed. I knew Grandma and Grandpa would never know they were there, but it made me feel better to still "be close" to them.
The pictures were added to the caskets–in fact, they were laid upon the hearts of my grandparents.
Some of my cousins then did likewise, so Grandma/Grandpa went to heaven with all their grandchildren’s pictures.
Interesting story: my grandmother passed away on New Year’s Eve 1991, just 2 1/2 months after Grandpa (they had been married for 63 years and it is like she just gave up on life after he passed on). In early January 1992, my Aunt called my mother and me to come down to their house because we just HAD to see something on their garage. Once we got there, we saw a male and female white snowy owl sitting on the roof and they had not moved that entire day. My cousin, a photographer, was able to get within 2 feet of these birds to take their picture, and they still did not move to get away from her. Snowy owls are not common in my part of Iowa–or even the state as far as I know–and I have never seen another one since that day 18 years ago. My cousin and I still think it was my grandparents’ spirits coming to us in that form to let us know they were okay and not to cry or worry about them.

Are rose flowers on the plant or vase, last longer?

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Roses left on the plant last longer, since they are getting all the nutrients from the plant. Roses in vases don’t last nearly as long, since they have been cut off of the plant.

Creative way to display wedding flowers?

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

My fiance and I are getting hitched in a few months and we are looking for some creative ways to showcase our wedding flowers during the procession. Does anyone have any ideas? My wife was thinking of getting holders to put on the ends of the pews in the church, but I dont know. Thanks.

Hi. I actually make wedding pew cones as a side business. We do custom made, hand-crafted pew cones for weddings. They have a bow so you can tie them on the pew end and they will hold your flowers. We can work with your florist to ensure they match your flowers and wedding theme nicely. See my site for more info, www.pewcones.com
