What kind of flower represents hidden beauty?

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

I’m writing a story and I want to use a flower to represent the main character.
Either a flower that represents hidden beauty or a flower most commonly seen, but often missunderstood.

Dark red or Burgundy rose means,,,unconscious beauty..
or maybe you can find something here..

un·con·scious
Without conscious control; involuntary or unintended: an unconscious mannerism.

What is the fastest, most beautiful flower that I can grow?

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

I need to grow a beautiful flower for a project I am doing. My limit is about 6 months, and I live in Bahrain, which is EXTREMELY hot/humid weather, especially in the summer which gets to about 40 degrees Farenheit at its hottest. I can grow inside though.. but have any idea on which beautiful flower is the easiest and fastest to grow? I heard a rose can take up to a year :(

A rose can take up to a year if you start it from seed, but if you take a cutting and give it the proper amount of light and water then it will usually bloom it’s first season. There are quite a few roses that handle hot weather quite well. Here is a site that shows you how to propagate a rose cutting.

Here is a list of roses that do well in hot humid climates. Stay away from the hybrid teas though. Hot may be good, but humid is not. They suffer from disease too easily.

Oh, by the way, in case you decide that a rose will not work, 6 months is enough time to grow just about anything.

Good luck

how long does it take for flower to change colors in colored water?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

I’ve tried to do this science project, and according to one paper it should start changing within hours. It has been 2 days and the flowers only have a few dots of color to them. How long should it take? I’ve used mums and carnations. Is there another type of flower that works better?

I don’t really know how long but I don’t think it should take 2 days. Carnations normally work pretty well. I bought some daisy’s the other day that were dyed so you could try that. One thing to keep in mind is you want to cut the stem right before you start – it simulates the "veins" of the flower and draws the color in better.

what are some good flowers to plant in a flower box for zone 5?

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

I live in the Chicago land area, zone 5 I believe. I want to plant a window box on the east side of my house, and would like to get some flower ideas that are tried and true suggestions. I also need flowers for patio containers. I need advice from some flower container experts. Ha! My patio is on the West side of my house. Lots of sun.

First of all you need to look up your zone for sure. I don’t think you are a 5. Then you need to decide do you want them to come back every year or not. The ones that come back are perennial and the others last only one season and are called annuals.
You can do a combo of both. Plant some that come back every year, like tulips, iris etc. then around the bottom plant some that are ground cover they will cover the dirt close to the bottom of your other flowers. Early annuals that you can plant when still kinda cool are pansy, then you could add petunia. Both of this continue to bloom and are pretty easy to take care of.

What is this huge red flower coming out of my banana tree?

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

i have a huge banana tree. i believe its called an abbysisian banana tree but I am not sure. basically there’s this huge red flower coming out of it and its beautiful, however it drips sap on the concrete. And i clean it up almost everyday to find out the next morning theres more on the floor. if i were to chop it off would my banana tree die? please help. and bees are loving the flower too. what should i do about that too?

That is the flower that will end up producing the entire bunch of bananas if allowed to continue it growth and if insects are allowed to fertilize the flower.
The banana is a very unique and unusual plant.
Be patient and watch it do its thing. It is fascinating.
If everything works out naturally, you will enjoy the show.
If your tree is not well rooted to firm soil, it may be a good idea to support it. The punch of bananas that it produces can be heavy enough to topple the tree.
Be aware that all the fruit tends to ripen at the same time, so if it is a tree that produces edible fruit, be ready to share it with others.
P.S. The sap will stain, so don’t get it on your clothes.
There is NOTHING that can remove that stain from cloth.

What kind of flower bulbs to purchase to plant in fall?

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

I am getting married in October. Instead of having a "candy bar" where guests can select different types of candy to take home I am doing a "bulb bar" where each guest can fill up a sack with different flower bulbs that they can plant before winter. I would like to start looking at what bulbs to buy but I have several questions including 1) What would be the cheaper kinds of flower bulbs that my guests could plant in the fall? 2) When I should I purchase the bulbs (now or in the fall?) Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The best way to get even the more expensive bulbs at a reasonable price is to order bulk from reputable mail order bulb companies. Don’t buy them in little packages at a garden center!

An important point to consider when you choose which bulbs to get is the climate that most of your guests will be going home to. Not all bulbs are suited to all climates.

Another consideration is to choose bulbs that are likely to give your guests years of pleasure rather only one spring show. Most tulips, for example, are not reliably perennial.

If you and your guests live in an are with cold winters a few suggestions for very inexpensive bulbs are crocuses, some of the narcissus (daffodils), some species tulips, muscari, rock garden irises, and Dutch irises.

You should look at some online catalogs and think about some selections. Then you will have lots of time to narrow your list down.

I suggest pre-ordering in July so you will encounter fewer "sold-outs" with a delivery date of a couple weeks before your wedding. Make sure you get the delivery date right – and you are likely to if you order from some of the many companies with lousy customer service.

The first company I suggest you try is Brent and Becky’s Bulbs. During their off season, call them and ask for help. That is the main reason I am suggesting this company first. Talking with a real person who has hands on experience is possible with them.

The second company I recommend is John Scheeper. They have a wide selection, good prices, and good service.

Hope this is helpful.
